What is Science?

Science is a body of knowledge and a process. Each have been developing for hundreds of years.

Scientific Knowledge:

Scientific knowledge is knowledge of a fact or phenomenon gained through a structured fact-based process known as the scientific method.

Scientific knowledge satisfies four basic conditions:

  1. It has passed rigorous independent testing

  2. It has been reviewed by peers and been published

  3. It includes measurement of actual or potential error

  4. It has achieved a degree of acceptance within the scientific community

The Scientific Process:

Scientists, engineers, and others use a process called the Scientific Method to add to our understanding of natural and physical phenomena. This is how scientific knowledge is collected and tested.

Science helps us understand measurable natural and physical processes. It allows us to link events and observations to larger causes in a mechanistic manner. Understanding the mechanisms that drive natural and physical processes helps us predict how these systems will respond to different inputs both now, and into the future.
